Despite the fanon interpretation of her character, Jade’s not some boring, shrill, pointlessly cheerful teenager who has a spirit animals and likes stuffed toys- she’s a fully self-sufficient, weapons-trained survivor who actively pursues knowledge and demonstrates an advanced understanding of the sciences at the age of sixteen. Given that she was stuck on a ship for three years prior, it’s highly likely that she’s either been self-educating somehow or already knew these things at the age of thirteen. (In fact, her introduction says she has a gift for nuclear physics.)

She’s been relatively alone for most of her life and was long burdened with the mixed blessing of being able to see future events in the clouds on Prospit while also being hampered by memory problems and ~~apparent narcolepsy~~ constantly getting fucked with by a psychic alien, yet she remained pretty relentlessly upbeat about life, regardless.

Speaking as someone who had pretty much exactly those kind of memory problems growing up- the kind where it’s gone unless you’ve made an associative link to an object or an action- they are incredibly fucking stressful. Not knowing what you were supposed to do but knowing that there is something that you have to do is one of the most disorienting feelings possible, and asking people tends to get you treated like you’re stupid- or worse, the people you ask just don’t know either, meaning that you’re left digging helplessly through your own jumbled thoughts.

Jade didn’t even have the option of asking, which means that unless Grandpa Harley instituted that colourful reminders system- and let’s face it, he doesn’t really seem like that organized of a guy himself- then Jade was left floundering around in forgetfulness until she figured that out on her own.

But I’ll stop rambling about Jade Harley.

Basically she’s great and people need to remember that she was a force to be reckoned with long before she went dogtier.

America makes it near impossible for a woman to stay autonomous—hard to get family planning resources/make the choice of getting an abortion, and harder to get child care support after the baby is born. Leaving women destitute and dependants everywhere.

Look at Canada! Not only do we give almost a full year off, it can be either maternity or paternity. That’s right, daddy can stay home with the baby while the mother goes back to work. And the leave can be also be split between them. For example, the mother could take six months, and then the father could take the other six. Did I also mention that the parent on leave continues to receive pay and is guaranteed their job back?
